Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (Bio2) is a world leading research and higher education unit that aims to provide novel solutions to help society transform to a sustainable economy based on the utilization of renewable resources. Our groups work collaboratively with strong partners from industry and academia on transdisciplinary research themes including materials, chemistry, synthetic biology, biotechnology and nanosciences.

Bio2 is at the forefront of forest products technologies and cutting-edge biotechnology.

The core competencies in forest products technology encompass the upstream selection of feedstocks, the pretreatment of lignocellulose biomass and downstream unit operations. We use novel approaches to the deconstruction and assembly of lignocellulosics into fibers, micro-and nanoparticles, composites and advanced functional materials.

As for biotechnology, we cover the whole development chain from strain and catalyst design to the bioprocess. We use synthetic biology, high-throughput screening and modeling to design and optimize the performance of enzymes and microbes. Finally, using bioprocess design and optimization we generate viable pathways and processes to targeted end products.

Ultimately, the activities in Bio2 result in innovative products and solutions for applications ranging from construction and textiles to energy and biomedicine.

The department hosts the Center of Excellence in Biomolecular Engineering of Biosynthetic Hybrid Materials (HYBER) and is home to two ERC grant holders.

Bio2 is internationally recognized for its multidisciplinary engineering education development in digitalized and online learning environments. Special emphasis is placed on the project-based learning across scientific disciplines combining engineering with art and design, mechatronics, mechanical engineering and entrepreneurship.

Bio2 is part of Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering
